Dr. Kathleen Petersen is Licensed Psychologist and Nationally Certified School Psychologist with over 20 years experience improving the lives of children to young adults with academic, behavioral, social and emotional difficulties. She supports their parents and caregivers, too. She obtained a doctorate in School Psychology from the University of Oregon.  While at the University of Oregon, she specialized in reading development and was awarded several related research grants and assistantships.

Experience

Dr. Petersen has extensive experience in the fields of psychology and education. She has worked as a school psychologist with schools in Arizona and Minnesota for 15 years.  She is well-versed in education law and has completed thousands of psychological and educational evaluations for individuals between the ages of 3 and 21.  Additionally, she has developed extensive school intervention plans, including district-wide reading instruction plans, IEPS and 504 plans for student with special needs.

As an independent educational consultant, Dr. Petersen has provided training on scientifically-based reading assessment and instruction, including DIBELS, to hundreds of educational organizations such as the Georgia Department of Education, Oklahoma Department of Education, Miami-Dade Public Schools and Chicago Public Schools.

Current Clinical and Consulting Work

The focus of Dr. Petersen's clinical work is using evidence-based practices to help children to young adults who are struggling academically, behaviorally and/or emotionally. Following is a sample of concerns she addresses in clinical practice:

  • Tantrumming and other emotional regulation difficulties
  • Post high school planning including post high school education and employment
  • Parental support and consultation


    As an independent educational consultation, Dr. Petersen continues to provide training and consultative services to educational organizations on the subjects of reading assessment and instruction.
